I built aerend for my final-year project at university. It is a ground-up graphical interface for Linux, including a display manager, a hardware input/event manager, a compositing window manager and a (rudimentary) GUI toolkit. In addition to this, it is networked, allowing multiple remote clients to manage GUIs on a centralised display.
